| Some women when faced
with an unexpected pregnancy do not feel ready to parent. However, they
still want to be sure that their child has a wonderful future. Adoption
can be a truly loving option for a woman who wants the best for her child
but doesn't feel like she is prepared to be a parent.
There are two main types of adoption: open and closed. As the birth mother, you can choose what type of adoption you prefer. In a closed adoption the identities of the birth parents and the adopting parents are kept confidential. In an open adoption, the birth parents and adopting parents have more information about each other. Often they will meet in person before the decision is made. You can arrange to receive information about your child as he or she grows up. You can get pictures or letters. In some open adoptions the birth parents even visit with the child. As the birth mother, you get to decide who (if anyone) will adopt your child. Deciding to place your child for adoption is very difficult. If you would like to learn more about this option, St. Elizabeth's Home provides a full range of maternity services including adoption counseling and a maternity residence program. Or contact us for more information. |
